1. Describe a volunteering experience you have had.

I’d like to talk about a humanitarian medical program in which I joined as a voluntary interpreter. It was probably 2 years ago when I was going to graduate from university. The program took place in A Luoi – a mountainous area of Hue where there were many . It was held by a group of retired American doctors and nurses who used to in the Vietnam war. The program aimed to give free medical treatment and medicines to the ethnic people living in that because they were so poor that they didn’t have money to go to the hospital. The American doctors and nurses obviously did not know any Vietnamese, so they needed someone like me who could speak both English and Vietnamese to help them communicate with the locals.

I participated in this program because I wanted to help those disadvantaged people. Besides, my major is Interpretation so that was a good chance for me to apply what I’ve learned into practice and get some . The project lasted for 2 weeks and every day, I had to get up at 5 a.m and went on a bus with the team to travel from the city center to that remote area. I’m not used to being an early bird, but the thought of helping others motivated me to get out of bed. I was interpreting for a nurse, and I also did other jobs such as setting up and collecting equipment at the end of the day.

During the program, many local people received our help to treat their illnesses. One child who had heart disease was also exempted from all the surgery costs. The to join this program is the best one I’ve ever made. I feel that I’ve done something meaningful for society and my community. After the program, I also learned many great things and improved my interpretation skills.

He is known for saving the life of a toddler who fell from the 12th floor of an apartment block. His name is Nguyen Ngoc Manh and he was working as a truck driver when the happened. At that moment, Mr. Manh heard screams and yells for help as the baby was spotted dangling from outside her apartment’s balcony. Without skipping a beat, he quickly exited his truck and climbed up the corrugated iron veranda right below the baby, which was also 2 meters from the ground. He made it just in time to catch the falling . The impact of the fall dented the veranda, leaving Manh with a sprained arm and the baby some injuries. Fortunately, none of them was lethal.

When I read the , I was astounded by his bravery. Later, I admired him even more after learning more about him as a person. Following his heroic act, he was always humble, saying anyone would do the same in his position. His wife, when interviewed by the media, said that he had always been a and generous person. The foundation is basically housing children with cancer from different places in our country. It medical care to children, education, food and other necessities. The foundation is primarily run by three doctors who lost their children from leukemia, colon cancer, and brain tumor. Their experience inspired and led them to establish a foundation for children who are living with cancer.

Anyway, my first experience at that foundation was three years ago when my best friend, who was a nursing student, invited me to join their volunteer activity. He said that their professor wanted to take them to the said foundation. As I was to know about children with cancer, I never hesitated to join.

On the day of our visit, we held some activities, of course intended for children. It was a lovely experience seeing kids be wreathed in smiles. Witnessing their condition for the very first time and hearing their stories made me realize then, how brave they were. I felt embarrassed of myself for having so much fear in life even on petty things.
