Thời gian đọc: ~20 min

1. Is there any situation where people disobey the law?

To be honest, I’ve never actually seen anyone litter. I’m sure it must still to some extent, but I genuinely think people are afraid to do so because of the fines and police presence. However, I know that no country is and that there are always people who will disobey the law. On another note, I think that perhaps people who come to Singapore are more likely to throw their trash on the ground if it isn’t something enforced in their home country.

2. Do people like being a policeman in your country?

I would say so. Actually, my father is a police officer and he seems to enjoy it quite a bit, although it is a tough job. Since Singapore has a reputation to maintain, the police force strives their to give their all to make sure that Singapore remains among the safest countries. With this said, some police officers feel quite a lot of , which makes it a challenging yet rewarding job.

3. Do people who break the law in your country receive the correct punishment?

The laws are made such that any act that is according to the constitution of our country is punishable in its own accord. Some of the most common offences are traffic-related incidents and often involve people not wearing seat belts or helmets. In a country like ours, it is very to maintain law and order to the maximum and there are repeat offenders who get away with crimes on many occasions. The more influential a person you are the easier it is for you to get away with crimes in my country so at times people who break the law receive the correct punishment and sometimes the lawyer and their contacts are able to influence the judiciary and justice is not delivered.

4. Are there any alternatives to putting someone in jail?

There are many alternatives that the government should have apart from jail to help people who commit crimes. Firstly it depends upon the kind of crime one commits and if it is something then they should be put in jail straightaway and let the law take its own course. There are some people who commit crimes out of necessity and they should be referred to different programs and be mentored to become a better individual. Traffic offenses are something that majorly goes unpunished so I’d like a program where those who commit traffic violations are punished with some sort of community service and are made accountable for their actions.

5. What do you think makes people commit serious crimes?

There are numerous reasons why people commit crimes. Criminals have different mindsets and obviously, necessities are different too. Some commit crimes to make some money as they are to make a living. To those who are born into families of criminals, committing a crime is not a wrong thing but a of living. There are also professional criminals who set out a particular target and work on it for months or in some cases even years. These people are a part of society and it is difficult for the police to distinguish them from a law-abiding citizen.

  • A law abiding citizen: một công dân tuân thủ pháp luật

6. Do you think some forms of entertainment, such as video games, promote violence?

Well, they do. Video games are sometimes violent and they take us into a world that does not exist. There are all sorts of video games for different groups but the ones promoting are specifically rated 18+. I know one video game called “Grand theft auto” where you are set on missions to kill other people, steal cars, and are involved in fights with the cops. If this game gets in the hands of kids, it will encourage them to try these actions in real life, which results in them committing crimes. Even though video games are a form of , I strongly believe they should come with a warning and the violence should be significantly reduced.
