1. Sơ lược về dạng bài Short answer questions – Câu trả lời ngắn
Short answer questions:
- Là dạng câu hỏi yêu cầu
, đòi hỏi người làm phải trả lời theo yêu cầu với thông tin có được từ bài đọc. - Dạng bài này vô cùng quan trọng phần thi IELTS Reading và thường xuất hiện nhiều trong các đề thi nên cần đặc biệt chú ý.
Short answer questions có 2 dạng:
Dạng 1: Giới hạn số từ câu trả lời.
Answer the questions below.
Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS from the passage for each answer.
Write your answers in boxes 8-13 on your answer sheet.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: PRODUCT RETURN
Fancy Foods wishes to inform the public that pieces of metal have been found in some jars of Fancy Foods Chicken Curry (Spicy). The batches of the jars involved have numbers from J6617 to J6624. The batch number is printed on the bottom of each jar.
If you have any jars with these batch numbers, please return them (preferably unopened) to the supermarket where you purchased them. You can also return them to the factory (Fancy Foods Retailers. Blacktown). Fancy Foods will pay $10 for each jar returned unopened and $5 for each jar already opened.
No payment will be made for empty jars, which do not need to be returned. However, the Retailing Manager will be interested to hear from people who have consumed chicken curry from any of the above batch numbers. In particular, it will be helpful if they can give information about the place of purchase of the product.
Jars of Fancy Foods Chicken Curry (Coconut) and Fancy Foods Chicken Curry (Mango) have not been affected and do not need to be returned.
REWARD
Fancy Foods will pay a reward of $10,000 to $50,000 for information which leads to the conviction of any person found guilty of placing metal pieces in its products. If you have such information, please contact the Customer Relations Manager, Fancy Foods Retailers, Blacktown.
2. Chiến lược làm bài
2.1 Một số lỗi thường gặp
- Synonyms and paraphrasing là vấn đề lớn nhất của thí sinh. Các bạn có xu hướng tìm kiếm từ khóa trong bài đọc
từ khóa trong câu hỏi. - Thường hay bỏ qua “Word limit” – giới hạn số lượng từ cần điền. Nếu viết thừa từ thì
sẽ không được điểm. - Có xu hướng đọc hiểu hết từng từ của bài. Tuy nhiên câu hỏi đang kiểm tra khả năng đọc lướt và tìm ý vì vậy không cần đọc hết bài.
- Khi gặp 1 từ không biết nghĩa, thường lo lắng và mất quá nhiều thời gian để dịch nghĩa mà quên mất phải tập trung vào ý chung của toàn bài.
- Tốn quá nhiều thời gian cho một câu hỏi.
2.2 Một số lưu ý khi làm bài
- Câu hỏi được sắp xếp theo trật tự bài đọc.
- Đọc câu hỏi rồi đọc đoạn văn, hiểu rõ ý của câu hỏi rồi mới tìm câu trả lời.
- Chú ý kỹ chỉ dẫn ‘NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER.’
- Lấy thông tin từ bài đọc,
trả lời bằng ý kiến cá nhân. - Keywords trong câu hỏi thường là Nouns (danh từ) hoặc Noun phrases (cụm danh từ) nên bạn có thể chú trọng tìm phần này trước.
- Khi có keywords, cố tìm từ đồng nghĩa và paraphrases tương đương để tìm thông tin.
2.3 Các bước làm bài

| Bước 2: | Đọc hiểu và gạch chân từ khóa trong câu hỏi. |
| • Chú ý các từ khóa biến đổi (từ đồng nghĩa, paraphrase) và không thể biến đổi (ngày tháng năm, tên riêng,..). | |
| Bước 3: | Phán đoán từ cần điền (về mặt ngữ nghĩa + ngữ pháp). |
| • Xác định loại từ cần điền (danh từ, tính từ…). | |
| • Từ cần điền thuộc phạm trù nghĩa như thế nào và có đặc điểm ngữ pháp ra sao. | |
| Bước 4: | Đọc lướt (skim) qua bài để khoanh vùng thông tin chứa đáp án. |
| • Chú ý từ đồng nghĩa - synonyms và paraphrases của keywords. | |
| Bước 5: | Đối chiếu thông tin và tìm đáp án. |
| • Đọc lại câu hỏi để đối chiếu thông tin. | |
